The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. This year eight Independent Sector students received the honor.

The highest federal recognition a college can earn for civic engagement is to appear on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Twenty-three of New York’s private, not-for profit campuses were selected this year for this honor, which highlights not only the role they play in solving community problems, but the meaningful, measurable outcomes they achieve.

St. Bonaventure University mathematics professor Dr. Christopher Hill called his model-building project with eight local high school students and their math teachers a “geometric barn-raising,” which is a good thing because few would have known it by its formal name, a “mega-icosahedron-raising.”

The Methodist Home for Nursing and Rehabilitation awarded Manhattan College with the good neighbor award at its 160th Anniversary Gala held at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx on Oct. 20. The College was recognized for enriching the lives of the Methodist Home’s residents by helping to develop a variety of programs throughout the years that coincide with academic courses.

The D’Youville College Hippotherapy program has received a $2,500 grant from the Buffalo Bills Youth Foundation to help fund activities of the equine-assisted therapy program for children with disabilities.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) honored institutions of higher education for their support of volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement by recognizing the nation’s top advocates for community service in the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
